Im just saying I have never heard any of my friends use it. It is completely possible that it is a regional saying that isnt used in Köln. And I have never heard, "Genau darauf stehe ich!" either. Yes I am a true german born and raised in Köln and my father works as a builder for volkswagon, but will soon get rid of him so we will move to the US to work for VW. And is Lizzie Mcguire really the best show to learn slang from, I watched on a vacation to US and she didnt use much amerikan slang.

Koern? Is that where Beethovan was born? Or was that Bonn?

coheecambriadude- 05-12-2007

koern? If you are refering to where Im from it is Köln (K-O-L-N umlaute "o", maybe american computers dont show it) and is pronounced Cologne, like the perfume for men. Beethoven was born in Bonn.

Yes I am a true german born and raised in Köln and my father works as a builder for volkswagon Oh man. But the word is Wagen, Volkswagen, why would you misspell such a basic word Well, you did say you were only 14 so I guess that can explain some of it

coheecambriadude- 05-13-2007

so what if I made one little typo its not like I spell check anything on here.

Alex, do you really recommend Lizzie McGuire for learning German? How do you do this (learn German from it)? I watched M. by Fritz Lang, and could only pick up the few German words I already knew. I was proud of myself for figuring out something that wasn't translated in the subtitles -- during the trial, the 'defense attorney' says something like "How can we convict this guy? He is a human being!" and one of the jurists shouts "ist kein mensch" which I think means, "this guy is not a man!" I would never be able to learn proper German this way, however. What is your method, Alex? What other German movies do you recommend?

AlexYCChiu- 05-13-2007

Well, you have to watch something that you would like. I like Lizzie Mcguire. The character of Lizzie fits Asians, very conservative, innocent, and cute. I love the Lizzie McGuire character. Then just order bunch of apisodes from amazon.de and watch it in German. If I don't understand what they say, I switch the audio to English and rerun that portion again.

Have you seen "Amelie" or "Dancer in the Dark?" They also feature Lizzie McGuire-type characters. Also, have you seen "Das schreckliche Madchen?" It stars a cute innocent girl who is treated poorly by her village for discovering a terrible truth. But back to language-learning... How do you make sure that the translations from English to German are correct? I only know a little Spanish, but when I see English movies dubbed into Spanish, I know that almost 30% of it is inaccurate. (They will say something to fit the mouth movements rather than fit the exact meaning.) Also, many times the subtitles will be different from the speaking parts.

he uses babelfish translator.

kamebazooka- 05-17-2007

Oh, I found the trailer for schreckliche madchen http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-3653180759730059048&q=schreckliche+madchen I couldn't understand any of it. Any German speakers see it?

CerealRapist- 05-19-2007

a grown man watching lizzie mcguire is unlikely to be the greatest inventor in human history.

paulus- 05-19-2007

CerealRapist, how can you say this, when you said that the rings had changed your life?

CerealRapist- 05-19-2007

i see no reason why both can't be true.
