You don't really "join" Anonymous. You basically just go to where they are having a protest. You buy a mask and make a sign and join in.

Once again that is true, but once you go to enough rallies and people see you there, you are a /b/rother. Which in turn makes you essentially unofficially a member of the anons. So in a sense you can join its just not placed in any book or anything, which is the appeal of the anons, the anonymity of it.

The thing is that the CoS is not going to attack you hard if you are not a major player. Hell they have not even attacked Tory or Mark very hard at all. And they are key players. You really have to do something that crosses the church at an extremely high level to provoke them framing you for something and stuff like that. I mean if you really piss them off a bit you will get them passing out flyers to your neighbors and stuff like that. Telling your job bad stuff. But the average kid in anonymous is not going to have enough resources to get them to react super hard.
