My thinking is even though ATA breaks rules, the reason people want him banned is because he is mostly uninterested in discussion -- He will post or make a controversial claim, but then he won't back it up with anything but more controversial claims. That sort of behaviour is more like spamming than discussion participation, and the big signatures also resemble spamming. But to be honest, Alex behaves similarly. It is only lately that Alex seems to be improving -- I haven't seen any controversial posts lately, and he is being more careful about his claims. So, if ATA improves like Alex, I would vote not to ban him.
Of course, controversial posts are more exciting and I don't want to discourage that, but if you make such posts, please try to back them up, and allow for the possibility you could be wrong if you cannot. Otherwise it is more like spam than discussion.
