Gay marriage now legal in California
SAN FRANCISCO — The California Supreme Court overturned a ban on gay marriage Thursday, calling such a prohibition unconstitutional and paving the way for California to become the second state where gay and lesbian residents can marry. In the 4-3 decision, Chief Justice Ron George wrote for the majority that domestic partnerships are not a good enough substitute for marriage. In striking down the ban, the court said, "In contrast to earlier times, our state now recognizes that an individual's capacity to establish a loving and long-term committed relationship with another person and responsibly to care for and raise children does not depend upon the individual's sexual orientation, and, more generally, that an individual's sexual orientation — like a person's race or gender — does not constitute a legitimate basis upon which to deny or withhold legal rights." Outside the courthouse, celebrations erupted among gay marriage supporters. "Today the California Supreme Court took a giant leap to ensure that everybody -- not just in the state of California, but throughout the country -- will have equal treatment under the law," said City Attorney Dennis Herrera, who argued the case for San Francisco. Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger said he will support the decision. "I respect the court's decision and as governor, I will uphold its ruling," Schwarzenegger said in a statement. "Also, as I have said in the past, I will not support an amendment to the constitution that would overturn this state Supreme Court ruling." The cases were brought by the city of San Francisco, two dozen gay and lesbian couples, Equality California and another gay rights group in March 2004 after the court halted San Francisco's monthlong same-sex wedding march that took place at Mayor Gavin Newsom's direction. http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,355836,00.html --------------------------------------------- Maybe there's hope for this country yet. Now other states need to follow.

You want Gays to be able to marry?

TwistinUnderSchizophrenia- 05-15-2008

Yes. I see nothing wrong with it. I don't think we should have a right to tell two people that love each other they can't get married.

Why does the state need to be involved in any of this Why not just let people have whatever kind of private ceremonies they want with whomever they want. And all money related arrangements can also be made without the state And when you've abolished weddings as a government affair altogether, then no one will plead for marriage rights.

that seems more ideal it doesn't even need to be a public issue, or anyones concern anti gays, or gays won't complain as much cause they won't hear about if they don't want to. I would bet there would be some anti gay extremist crashing weddings and causing trouble if there was no law though.

It was only a matter of time that you would start posting gay pictures again, you closet homo. As for the subject, while I don't support gay marriage, I do support civil unions and state's rights. If California and its people decided that this is what they want, then so be it.
