..very good. The street is his world. He doesn't go up town and pretend to be anything fancy. He can, but he finds more real (taps on the table) in the world that he is in, that being a prison. I have to wonder how he could find the opportunity to go up town.

Well actually you know he is speaking metaphorically. There is a lot to the depth of the statement. But back in the day Charlie had plenty of money and hung with a lot of wealthy people including rock stars. So he has physically been "uptown". But to understand what it really means you have to study Charlie a little. You see by "uptown" he really means the act of putting on a facade. Now to Charlie a facade is anything that is not coming right from the heart. For example the best writers of songs come straight from the heart without much "filtering". Most music is heavy filtered by the musician attempting to work within a framework or use different techniques. Like allusions and stuff. Or rhyming. Now Charlie was one of those one in a million musicians that could play right from the heart and produce excellent stuff. This is why some of his melodies and stuff will hit you in your soul. THis is what Neil Young meant when he said that Charlie was a song "spewer" and not a song "writer". It is something very special when the music just comes out. Had Charlie been more in control he would have been a great musician in his type of music. And actually he was very versatile. So most song writers are uptown and Charlie is downtown. He does not like to put on an act.
